Introduction

Cardiff University has a long history of welcoming Malaysian students. Malaysian students currently make up a substantial portion of the total international student population at Cardiff and contribute almost a quarter of all international undergraduates at Cardiff. Cardiff University’s Students’ Union has a thriving Malaysian Student Society with regular social events held throughout the year. The University welcomes applications from Malaysian students to all of its programmes and values the contribution they make to the student community.

Requirements for entry onto programmes at Cardiff University

The following information is to be used as a guide only — more detailed information can be obtained from the International Development Division. The University’s general entrance requirements and any specific degree programme requirements should also be considered. If you are unsure about whether or not your qualifications are acceptable, please contact us for more information.

Requirements for undergraduate programmes

Entrance requirements for undergraduate courses (i.e. Bachelors programmes) vary according to the programme applied for and the background of the applicant. As a general rule admissions tutors would ask that the following conditions be met:

Academic Entry Requirements

Students with good grades in GCE A Level examinations, STPMs, or the International Baccalaureate are acceptable. More information about A level grades and their equivalents can be found in the Undergraduate Prospectus on our website.

Diplomas from Polytechnics and similar institutions may be acceptable for first and sometimes for second year entry for Engineering, Law or Business courses. Requirements for postgraduate taught courses

Entrance requirements for taught postgraduate programmes (i.e. Masters courses) vary according to the course applied for and the background of the applicant. As a general rule admissions tutors would ask that the following conditions be met:

Either: Students who hold a good Bachelor’s degree (normally, a minimum GPA of 3.0) from a recognised Malaysian institution

OR: Consideration is also given to applicants who have completed a five year Advanced Diploma.

Requirements for postgraduate research programmes

As a general rule students applying for research programmes from Malaysia should be able to provide evidence that they have already carried out research, usually via the successful completion of a relevant Masters degree. Please also read the notes below giving advice on how to apply for a research programme.

Advice about studying for an MPhil / PhD at Cardiff University

In order to apply for an MPhil/PhD at Cardiff University, you can fill in the application form as normal. We do recommend, however, that you follow the procedures given below before you formally apply.

In order to apply for an MPhil / PhD you must first find out if there is any research group or member of staff who would be happy to supervise your work and you MUST have a research proposal drafted.

Once you have a clear idea of what you would like to research. Then you need to have a look at the relevant academic school web-pages. You can find these on www.cf.ac.uk/departments

If you look through the School web-pages you should be able to find details of what research that School carries out and which members of staff are involved. If you identify research that you are interested in you should contact the relevant member of staff (contact details should be on the web pages) and give them a brief idea of what you would like to do. Please note you should only contact full members of staff and not research associates. If they agree that they would be interested in receiving an application from you then you should apply in the normal way. You can find out how to do this on: www.cf.ac.uk/international/apply

Although this does seem like a lengthy procedure it is proven that students who have already made contact with the relevant tutor are far more likely to be accepted than those who apply without doing this.
